This is a post similar to the one Decca left in the private guild discussion area.

I will soon be making a move to NYC once my time with the marine corps expires. Before I'm out I'll be making up a resume and whatnot but I have no real work experience aside from some fast food/restaurant management work I did before I joined the military and some college (no degree).

So, I obviously plan to take advantage of my GI Bill and go back to college for some sort of Computer Science degree but I'll still need to have some spending money since the GI bill will only help me pay for living expenses and school. Anybody have any personal experiences with making a big move like this or any pointers? On what kind of research or preparations I should be making for this moving?

In case you were all wondering, I'm moving to be with my girlfriend whom I met on WoW and have been with for a year next month. (Yes, we've paid each other several visits and are very involved so please don't ask about our relationship. I'm only concerned with tips on making the move.)

Thanks in advance for any help :)

hope you have a sizable GI bill. NYC is expensive to live in.

Also have a backup plan. You are involved over a distance relationship. You could move in with her and after a few months decide that you cant stand her so make sure you have a backup plan. Not trying to be cynical but be realistic.

Don't forget to have a backup plan in case you don't have a backup plan. you should really have a backup plan.

NYC = $$$$$ ... My recommendation is depending on how soon you want to start school, do some research on schools. We have a CUNYs (city schools) and private ones.

Living in Brooklyn is much cheaper then Manhattan. You can find nice apartments on the outskirts of Brooklyn and still have a short commute to Manhattan (assuming you need to travel there since most colleges are located there).

Otherwise craigslist can be your best friend when it comes to finding things to get you started out.

The new GI bill pays me depending on the zip code my school is in. So for any zip code in the NYC area I'll be getting around $2700 a month for rent/etc. alone. They also pay out around $12,000 per term so the only real problem now is getting a job which I realized today that I am over-qualified for plenty of jobs in the NYC area and hopefully the military background will give me the extra boost I need to get my foot in the door.

Probably a lot of Asians in-guild still. Maybe be a yakuza enforcer?
