It says he had a horse so I would assume he lives rather far away from the city. Where I grew up in rural NC, there was maybe 1 house every 30 miles. Once you get to a certain distance away from other people most people don't lock their doors. But he probably did lock his doors, article says his "home" then clarifies by saying his "front porch and barn".

And you'll notice the stuff they took included lawn mowers, ladders, weedeaters. Probably not worth the gas it took to get there.

Google maps doesn't even know where jacksonfield is. Probably Jacksonville, which is kinda remote.

Unless gas has gone up a lot more than I realize it would of defnitely been worth it to steal a bunch of ladders and other pieces of equipment from a contractor. Likely it won't be cheap stuff that breaks after a week of hard use.
